European Cyber Security Month also in Serbia

18/10/2013

The European Union Agency for Network and Information Safety (ENISA) is running its European Cyber Security Month campaign for the second time in a row during October. This year Serbia is joining in, represented by the Register of National Domain Names of Serbia (RNIDS). European Cyber Security Month (ECSM) aims to promote cyber security among the population in order to change attitudes towards cyber threats and to provide the public with the latest information through education and exchange of good practices. RNIDS is organising two events in O3ONE Gallery in Belgrade as part of ECSM – an exhibition and a panel discussion – which are open to all.

Firstly, the History of Telecommunications Security - From Smoke Signals to the Internet exhibition will open to the public on October 21st at 19:00, which will in a fun way present the development of long-distance communication. The exhibition was organised by RNIDS in collaboration with the Diplo Foundation. The author of the exhibition is Lazar Bošković, the illustrator is Vladimir Veljašević and the exhibition design is the work of Orange Studio. From prehistoric times to the present day, it has always been important to keep communications confidential, preserve the original meaning of the message and ensure the transmission is accessible. Everything that once applied to smoke signals, carrier pigeons, the telegraph, telephone, radio and television, is today even more important and complex when considering the Internet and today’s wirelessly connected world. From communicating using clouds of smoke, which could seen by everyone, to the neighbour’s Internet connection which everyone would like to use, the issue of security has always been a question of the level of knowledge and adherence to the rules.

Then, on October 22nd, from 12:00 to 15:00, there is a panel discussion titled Cyber Security in Cyber Serbia, in which local experts from all fields relevant to Internet security will be participating. The moderator is Žarko Ptiček, a lawyer specialising in IT law and a member of the RNIDS Statutory Committee. Panel participants are: Žarko Kecić, RNIDS executive director for ICT services, Luka Gerzić, IT security specialist from the company Gerzić & Associates, Milan Nikolić, director for corporate security at Telenor Serbia, Vladimir Marinkov, a lawyer specialising in cyber-crime from the law firm Guberina-Marinkov, and Miloš Rančić, system administrator at the open creative space for programming and technology enthusiasts, Hacklab Belgrade.

The topics to be discussed include the importance of the DNS system, which is the basis of communication on the Internet, and the potential problems caused by security flaws in this system. Besides defending Internet sites from attacks by hackers, cyber security has a wider scope in companies serious about Internet security, primarily in protection of the entire ICT infrastructure, protection from industrial espionage and risks and incidents management. High-tech crime is becoming an ever-present daily threat to the modern way of life of ordinary citizens, so the panel will also look at examples from local court practice.

RNIDS, as an organisation of key importance for the stability and development of the DNS system in Serbia, through all of its activities is committed to maintaining security in the local Internet space, and especially to educating users of the national .RS and .СРБ Internet domains. The Register as Soon as You Think  campaign is currently underway and highlights the importance of Internet domains in everyday life.
