On 31st March, the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry (RNIDS), together with the FONIS Association of Students of Information Science, organised a talk titled Cyber Security – Everywhere for Everyone at the Belgrade Faculty of Organisational Sciences. Around 150 students and other interested members of the public had a chance to hear about the different ways of staying safe on the Internet and what the greatest present-day online threats are.
“The biggest problem we face today is that the resources needed to do serious damage to a website or company are very small, while the resources required for their defence are huge,” said Boško Radivojević, director of the company Mainstream. He reminded the audience that there were currently some 10 billion devices connected to the Internet and that by 2020 there would be 50 billion, representing an increased risk of cyber attack.
In Serbia there are currently 2.85 million Internet users, of whom 1.16 million sell or make purchases via this global network, while only a third of Internet users from Serbia keep their online content on servers in this country. Luka Gerzić from Gerzić & Associates talked about the security of the national .rs and .срб Internet domains, about encryption and about the latest trends in this area. He made it clear that saying “I’ve got nothing to hide, I've done nothing wrong” was no excuse for irresponsible behaviour online. “People don’t want strangers being able to see their bank statements or email, or to track their movements, yet all that can easily be accessed today with a little skill and time,” said Gerzić.
Jovan Šikanja, security administrator for the Limundo online marketplace, reminded the audience that security was a process and not a product, quoting Bruce Schneier, the renowned American cryptographer. “The foundation of this long-term process is the training of employees in one’s company on security and the risks that they face in their everyday activities at work,” said Šikanja.
RNIDS, as an organisation of key importance for the stability and development of the DNS system in Serbia, is fully committed to safeguarding security in the local Internet space. The series of talks on the subject of cyber-security at university faculties in Serbia will continue in the future. RNIDS is especially mindful of the need to educate the users of the national Internet domains and has created a site targeted to them at domen.rs and домен.срб.
