The Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names (RNIDS) published the March issue of RNIDS News, which represents an internal journal of RNIDS and contains current information on the operation and activities of RNIDS both in Serbia and abroad.
In the March issue of the News, RNIDS announces Serbian Internet Domain Day (DIDS), a one-day conference celebrating this year the third anniversary of the .rs domain registration. The event will take place in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce on March 10th 2011.
The conference, dedicated to the development of the Internet within the domain space of Serbia, will gather creative people and experts in the field of the Internet and IT. The central topics of the conference are: plans and activities of RNIDS and experience of European Internet registries; the process of .срб domain introduction; limited domain resources and political aspects of domain allocation; intellectual property on the Internet and the domain as a brand; hi-tech crime, privacy and responsibility for Internet content. Successful projects within the .rs Internet domain will also be presented at the conference.
Apart from experts from Serbia, our guests from abroad will also participate in the conference: Wim Degezelle (from CENTR, the organisation which brings together national domain registries from over 50 European countries), Leonid Todorov (from the Russian Internet Registry) and Monika Pank-Rank (from the Austrian Internet Registry).
RNIDS News also informs the public that the business premises of RNIDS are moved to 18a Žorža Klemansoa Street. The new premises are owned by RNIDS and have been purchased with the aim of providing assets, as well stability of the national Internet registry in the long run. The RNIDS office will be functioning as a real Home of the Serbian Internet Domain because it includes a room intended for education, presentations and other activities aimed at popularising the Internet in Serbia.
The March issue of RNIDS News also brings an interview with Ms Julia Ovchinnikova, a representative of the Coordination Centre of the Russian ccTLDs (.ru and .рф), where she talks about her experience and the first results of their ongoing campaign related to Cyrillic domain name registrations. Bearing in mind the fact that the Russian Federation is one of the first four countries to which non-Latin country code Top Level Domains have been assigned, it was interesting to learn how they initiated their Cyrillic domain.
The RNIDS News also presents statistical data on the increase in the number of registered .rs domain names from 2009 to 2011, along with the percentage of registered .rs domain names according to location of registrants. A total of 64,000 .rs domain names have been registered so far in five address spaces: .rs, .co.rs, .org.rs, .in.rs and .edu.rs.
Also, the March issue of RNIDS News follows international activities of the national registry. On February 11th, RNIDS sent the documentation for delegating the .срб domain management to IANA. More than 20 organisations gave their support to RNIDS for the .срб domain management. Also, RNIDS submitted the documentation proving its technical, administrative and financial capacity. The process of delegating the Cyrillic domain is expected to be finalised by the end of April, whilst the process of registering .срб domain names is supposed to commence by May 15th 2011.
Other international activities presented in this issue of the journal include the news announcing that RNIDS, in cooperation with the Austrian (NIC.AT), French (AFNIC), German (DENIC), Polish (NASK), Finish (FICORA), Slovenian (ARNES) and Montenegrin (Domen) national Internet registries, prepares a Facebook game called Domain Star which will be dealing with Internet domain names.
