As a national register of Internet domain names, RNIDS is a member of CENTR (Council of European National Top Level Domain Registries, and cooperates with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).
RNIDS representatives are involved in the work of ICANN and CENTR.
ICANN was founded in 1998 under a contract with the United States Department of Commerce which de facto manages the Internet in the technical sense. ICANN coordinates the Internet’s global system of unique identifiers and ensures its stability and security. ICANN takes decisions regarding the domain name system (DNS), assigns IP numbers to regional Internet registries and manages the DNS root name server system.
CENTR is an association of national ccTLD registries in Europe, but also several non-European countries such as Canada, New Zealand, Japan and Iran. It has existed in its current form since 2006 and has its headquarters in Brussels. CENTR plays a role in cooperation and the exchange of experiences between national registries in order to improve services for Internet users.
